ABOUT CLINICAL TRIALS

What is a Clinical Trial?

A clinical trial is a study conducted with patients, usually to evaluate a new treatment. Each study is designed to answer scientific questions and to find a new and better way to help patients.

Standard treatments, the ones now being used, are the building blocks for new treatments. New treatments are often based on what has worked in the past.

During a trial, more information is gathered about a new treatment, the side effects, and how well it may or may not work.

The treatments that are now considered standard for patient care, were at one time clinical trials. Only patients that want to, take part in clinical trials.

Why Participate?

Patients take part in clinical trials for a number of different reasons. Some of the reasons include hope for themselves, a way to feel better, a longer time to live, or the knowledge that they are making a contribution that could help another person.

Patients that participate in clinical trials are sometimes the first to receive and benefit from a new medication that is not yet available to the general population.

Patients that participate in clinical trials are also monitored carefully during the trial and in the follow up period.

Without clinical research, and the people that participate, there would be no advances in medical treatments. Study volunteers are truly “Medical Heroes!”

If you are currently taking any medications, you have study participants to thank. Every medication is evaluated through the rigorous process of clinical research before your healthcare provider can prescribe it for their patients.
